PATRIOT-NANO - WiFi Extender - catch it outside, use it inside
Ep21 - A Word from the Wise - PATRIOT-NANO - WiFi Extender - catch it outside, use it inside.
DISCLAIMER: The Patriot-Nano is only powered by 5 volts, not 12 Volts as stated in this podcast.
Louise is joined by Daniel in this episode of “A Word from the Wise” as they discuss the PATRIOT-NANO. Find out how the PATRIOT-NANO uses an external antenna to catch WiFi signals outside to bring them inside through a 8 meter antenna cable and into the Solwise PATRIOT-NANO which can then distribute a strong WiFi signal inside a Motorhome/Boat/Building.
Idea for use on a campsite that offers WiFi but the signal has trouble passing through the metal exterior of the vehicle, the external antenna solves this issue by catching the signal outside and then transporting it inside the motorhome.

    Cat 4 is bit of a let down for a product that has been recently released. But I guess you get what you pay for and this seems like an overall good value product.

      It certainly is good value for money and to be honest it is likely good enough for what the vast majority of folks need. I am hopeful that should the idea of an external device prove success for Teltonika then they will invest in units with gigabit ports and the new wifi and cat levels. Sales of this unit have been very steady for us so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

    I've been using RUT240 and RUT950s with XPOL-1 antennas. Don't need wifi so this looks like it should be a good improvement and for less than a RUT240 (similar antenna gain but without the cable loss). From the spec it looks like it isn't passive POE but normal 802.3af.

    Then how would we know by seeing the antenna that which side is it focusing its waves? Will the user need to put receiver antenna in same direction mandatorily as the transmitter antenna has gain in one direction!?

      Identifying Orientation: I'm not sure there is a generic answer to this question, antennas come in all shapes and sizes. If it is not obvious try searching for an arrow somewhere on the antenna, otherwise consult the manual. Selecting Orientation: If the link is point-to-point then the two antennas should be aimed at each other. For point-to-multipoint then the central antenna should be omnidirectional and each endpoint shoul be aimed at that. Hope that helps.

    I bought the Poynting MIMO-3-12 V2 to replace a cheap £30 dome antenna. However, I can barely get any signal from the mimo in any location. Ive reverted back to my cheap tiny dome antenna which gives me the best signal. I wasted £135 on the mimo plus £25 for the magnets. Now I have £150 worth of equipment sitting in a box. Just to be clear, I purchased it from broadband buyer, not from Solwise.

    • @SolwiseMD
      @SolwiseMD 8 місяців тому

      I think you may be asking if the two connections to an antenna are joined together. This is a bit off-topic but I'll try to give you an answer. On some antennas when you test the connections with a multimeter it may seem that the connections are shorted toether when you test it with a multimeter which uses an dc current to make the test. However if you do the same test using an ac signal in the frequency range of the antenna you should get a very different result. This would be because you would be measuring the impedance of the antenna not the resistance. Imagine the antenna as an inductor. 0 ohms at DC but some other value at AC. Hope this helps.

    • @solwise
      @solwise 11 місяців тому

      We sure did, they do look the same. If you just want a simple 'ping' that says 'I am here' then go for the plain beacon. If you want a 'ping' that says 'I am here AND this is how hot it is, and this is how humid it is and I've just been moved and a magnet just tripped me' then you go for the sensor beacon. If you're still not sure do give us a ring

    At the end how many milliwats will find to the receiver??How calculate it from -80 dbm??

    • @SolwiseMD
      @SolwiseMD Рік тому

      Generally you will find the sensitivity of a receiver expressed in dBm anyway so the question is somewhat moot. If a receiver says in can receive 10Mbps at -90dBm, then -80dBm of signal should work just fine. However, since you ask, -80dBm is the same as -8Bm, or eight zeros (noughts) to the right, so 1x10^-8, I think that makes -80dBm = 0.000 000 01 mW (is that 10pW picoWatts?)

    What is never mentioned in antenna radiation is whether or not the E/M loops being radiated do break down into loops of half wavelength as the loop try to grow in size with distance, In waveguides and cavity resonators it is common to show the stacking of " half wavelength E/M blocks to fit in the available space. A one megacycle wave, has a much larger loop than a 5 GigaHertz signal and though everyone talks about lobes, and directivity, and efficiency, and so on, no one talks about the "stacking of E/M blocks" the size of which depends on the frequency of transmission. So for a given frequency , how many stacked E/M loops exist in it as the wave moves out? I have thought about this for the last 80 years and it seems to me that when one has a directional antenna, or a phased array, all that is happening the system is cutting off and eliminating the peripheral blocks in the stack of E/M blocks in the lobe or in any omnidirectional antenna, I simulated this with a computer algorithm which, when the circumference ( wavefront) of the wave grew larger than a wavelength integers, then the " circumference would accommodate another loop half a wavelength long". The simulation works beautifully and the patterns that emerge make it so obvious, after I saw it, From a central location of the antenna, after the wave settles down, the patterns seems to change from a "polar diagram" to a cartesian diagram where the four symmetrical squares of cartesian coordinates, simultaneously move out their four quarters containing the same pattern of E/M loops as exist in rectangular waveguides contain the higher modes. When I plotted the B and the E field loops far from the antenna they came out to be exactly as occurs in rectangular waveguides with the B loops as normal, and the E loops are exactly the same as the E in the waveguide and the surface currents in a waveguide, It is exactly the same pattern, So it seems, that a centrally placed antenna as a source, will have the near E/M fields going through "a pushy transient pattern" then "a middle field pattern" which I call the settling down zone, and then the far field would resemble the pattern obtained in a rectangular waveguide excited with an electric probe or a magnetic probe as one desires. It is fascination to see the four quarters of cartesian coordinates moving out with additional loops being added as the distance increases, It is remarkable, This stacking of E/M blocks, the size of half a wavelength, in a radiating pattern, is interesting, and in a phased array or a directional antenna, it seems that all one does is to " phase out the peripheral E/M blocks and donate the power to the other half wavelength E/M blocks remaining in the " stacked lobe" There seems to be more going on in radiation than one thinks, and this "stacking effect" needs further discussion . An analogy may be used by looking at Chladni's figures in vibrating sheets or a Jelly block, and after all our radiating medium is not much different from a jelly or a rubber block with its "own impedance" in how it permits our signals to "accelerate " build and decay and reverse those the E/M loops the size of half a wavelength. ua-cam.com/video/wvJAgrUBF4w/v-deo.html

    I use a few of your homeplugs (wifi doesn't stretch to all corners). May be worth mentioning that with the addition of a cheap POE to DC (easily available - POE to e.g. 12v, 9V etc adapter or splittter), you can apparently power other things (e.g. cameras which are not POE devices themselves). I haven't actually tried (I have POE cameras) but have spoken with others who have used this solution.
